Kabalega International Airport is emerging as a critical component of Uganda’s logistical and transport framework ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, officials have confirmed.

Located near Hoima City, the airport is being developed to handle international charter flights, team delegations, officials, and supporters expected during the tournament. Authorities indicated that ongoing works include runway expansion, installation of modern navigation systems, enhanced security infrastructure, and improved passenger handling facilities.

The airport’s proximity to Hoima City Stadium positions it as a strategic gateway for western Uganda, reducing pressure on Entebbe International Airport during peak AFCON travel periods. Planners noted that decentralizing air traffic is essential for efficient tournament operations.

Beyond AFCON 2027, Kabalega International Airport is expected to support oil and gas activities in the Albertine region, tourism, and regional trade. Its dual-purpose design aligns with the government’s vision of integrating sports infrastructure with broader economic priorities.

Officials emphasized that preparations are being coordinated among aviation authorities, immigration services, security agencies, and local governments to ensure compliance with international aviation and safety standards. Temporary arrangements for peak tournament operations are expected to complement permanent infrastructure upgrades.

Tourism stakeholders believe the airport will enhance access to attractions such as Murchison Falls National Park, positioning AFCON 2027 as both a sporting spectacle and a tourism promotion platform.

As Uganda advances its co-hosting responsibilities, Kabalega International Airport is set to play a pivotal role in facilitating movement, supporting regional development, and strengthening the country’s overall readiness for AFCON 2027.
