The Uganda Cranes have stormed to the summit of Group C at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 with a commanding 2–0 victory over Niger at Namboole Stadium on Monday night. The result puts Uganda within touching distance of the knockout stage, setting up a thrilling final group showdown with South Africa.
From the first whistle, the Cranes looked organised, compact, and determined to dictate the pace. Their defensive shape frustrated the Nigerien attackers, while the midfield controlled possession with quick, decisive passes. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Allan Okello calmly slotted home after a sweeping move down the flank with a penalty score. The second goal arrived after the interval, courtesy of Joel Sserunjogi, who punished a defensive lapse with a composed finish that sent the home crowd into wild celebrations.
At the heart of Uganda’s success was goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, whose timely saves and authoritative presence in the box shut down any hope of a Niger comeback. His outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match accolade — a moment he described as the reward for hard work and faith.

“I thank God for this moment — a moment I’ve worked hard for and, most importantly, for the three points we’ve earned,” Mutakubwa said, adding that “we know the threat South Africa poses, so we’re going back to regroup and prepare for that game.”
Head coach Morley Byekwaso praised his squad’s ability to bounce back from adversity after their opening defeat to Algeria.
“Following the loss to Algeria, we knew every game was like a cup final,” Byekwaso remarked. “We never lost focus, and I am proud of the way the players responded. South Africa is a strong side, but we’re hungrier than ever.”
With yesterday’s win, Uganda now sits top of Group C with six points, two clear of both Algeria and South Africa. A draw or victory in their final group match will guarantee passage to the quarter-finals — a feat that would mark another proud milestone for the nation’s CHAN campaign.
