The CHAN 2024 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Uganda has issued a vital safety reminder to football fans attending CHAN 2024 matches at Mandela national Stadium- Namboole, emphasizing the importance of personal and public safety to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience throughout the tournament.

Addressing press at Uganda Media Centre ahead of CHAN 2024 Match Day 3, Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Sub-Committee, praised the passionate support from fans, but cautioned that the intense enthusiasm must be balanced with adherence to stadium regulations and safety protocols.

“The cheers from the stands have been the wind beneath the Uganda Cranes’ wings, lifting their performance to new heights,” Dr. Mugimba said.

“However, it is vital that every fan respects stadium rules and follows safety guidelines to protect themselves, fellow supporters, and the players,” he added.

Among the most important safety measures reiterated by the LOC is the ban on several items deemed dangerous or disruptive, including vuvuzelas, whistles, face masks, laser pointers, weapons, and large banners.

The prohibition on vuvuzelas, in particular, is supported by scientific research showing that the instrument produces noise levels of up to 131 decibels—comparable to a jet engine taking off—which can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss if fans are exposed repeatedly.

Dr. Mugimba explained, “Although vuvuzelas have become a cultural symbol in some football environments, the health risks associated with their noise levels cannot be ignored. We urge fans to respect these bans to maintain a safe and comfortable atmosphere for everyone.”

Fans are also advised to arrive early to avoid long queues and avoid rushing at entrances or exits, which could lead to accidents. Cooperation with security personnel, adherence to bag checks, and reporting any suspicious activity are additional steps to maintain order and safety within the stadium.

Tickets for the highly competitive CHAN 2024 matches are sold exclusively online, with some match days selling out rapidly. Dr. Mugimba urged fans to purchase their tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment and last-minute challenges.

As the tournament progresses, the LOC remains committed to balancing the electric atmosphere created by fans with rigorous safety measures, ensuring that CHAN 2024 remains a celebrated and secure sporting event for all attendees.
