Uganda on Monday, 4th August, 2025, marked a historic milestone as it hosted the opening matches of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 at the newly refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. This is the first time Uganda has hosted the prestigious tournament, and the atmosphere lived up to the occasion.

The double-header drew thousands of fans from across the country, with the stadium filled to capacity for the second match of the evening, underlining the nation’s passion for football and its readiness to deliver a world-class tournament.

The opening match saw Guinea edge past Niger in a closely contested battle that ended 1–0 in favor of the West African side. Guinea’s disciplined approach and solid teamwork proved decisive, earning them an early lead in Group C.

However, all eyes were on the second fixture as hosts Uganda Cranes took to the pitch against Algeria. In a game that showcased Algeria’s technical superiority and clinical finishing, Uganda fell short with a 3–0 loss. Despite the defeat, the Cranes received overwhelming support from the home crowd, whose chants and cheers created an electric atmosphere throughout the 90 minutes.

The match attracted a high-profile audience, with several dignitaries gracing the stadium. Among them was Uganda’s First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, who joined thousands of Ugandans in witnessing the historic event. Also in attendance were the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, FUFA President Hon. Moses Hassim Magogo, government ministers, members of parliament, foreign diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In her presence at the stadium, Hon. Janet Museveni symbolized the government’s strong support for sports development and its commitment to hosting international events that uplift Uganda’s profile on the continental stage.

The successful hosting of the opening matches set a high standard for the rest of the tournament and affirmed Uganda’s growing stature in African football.
