Kololo Ceremonial Grounds transformed into a vibrant stage of unity and celebration as Uganda officially launched the TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 tournament. This wasn’t just a ceremonial flag-off — it was a national festival, bursting with color, music, and patriotic spirit. With leaders, fans, and cultural icons in full attendance, the event showcased Uganda’s readiness to host Africa’s finest homegrown football talent and its commitment to delivering a tournament infused with national pride and African excellence.

The launch was graced by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni joined by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni. A defining moment of the day came when the President scored the ceremonial first goal, drawing excitement and applause from the thousands in attendance and setting a powerful tone for what CHAN 2024 means to the nation.

The grounds at Kololo were a melting pot of Ugandan society. Cabinet and State Ministers, Members of Parliament and Government officials, Football officials stood alongside football fans, school children, veteran athletes, CHAN 2024 Volunteers and citizens from all walks of life. The atmosphere was both festive and symbolic a clear reflection of the country’s collective embrace of CHAN 2024 as a national project.

Adding further weight to the event were the former Uganda Cranes players, including representatives from the legendary 1978 squad, with Tom Lwanga standing out as a proud symbol of Uganda’s rich football history. Their presence bridged generations, inspiring younger fans and players alike.

Ambassadors and High Commissioners from across Africa and beyond also graced the event, underscoring CHAN 2024’s continental importance and Uganda’s growing reputation as a capable and welcoming host of major international events.

Cultural performances lit up the ceremonial grounds with traditional dancers, drummers, and school choirs entertaining the crowd in a dazzling display of Uganda’s heritage. The entire event felt like a living canvas painted in the national colors of Black, Yellow, and Red, together with the tournament’s theme Orange, pulsing with energy and pride.

The Government showcased Uganda’s extensive preparations for CHAN 2024. From stadium renovations to volunteer mobilization, security planning and community engagement while the launch was an open invitation to the continent showing Uganda’s readiness.  

Beyond the music and performances, the launch served as a powerful reminder of the role sports play in uniting a nation. The blend of youth, tradition, leadership, and legacy created an atmosphere of optimism and shared purpose.

The CHAN 2024 launch sealed its place as a national moment, not just the beginning of a tournament, but the celebration of a country ready to shine on the continental stage. With its heart on display and spirit ablaze, Uganda declared itself open to Africa as a host and a proud partner in the beautiful game.
