Algeria made their debut appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2011, during the tournament’s second edition hosted by Sudan. Drawn in Group A, Algeria progressed to the knockout stage where they ended South Africa’s maiden run with a 2–0 victory in the quarterfinals. They went on to finish fourth overall.

After missing a few editions, Algeria returned with renewed determination  leading to their most memorable campaign as hosts of the 2022 CHAN (held in early 2023 due to scheduling changes). Under coach Madjid Bougherra, Algeria assembled a formidable local squad and delivered dominant performances throughout the competition.

They topped their group without conceding a single goal and proceeded to eliminate Ivory Coast, Niger and Senegal on their path to the final. In a tense championship match against Senegal, the game ended in a goalless draw with Algeria narrowly losing 5–4 on penalties. Despite the heartbreak, the team earned widespread praise for their disciplined defense, tactical maturity and overall consistency.

Looking ahead to the 2025 CHAN finals, Algeria finds itself in a competitive Group C alongside hosts Uganda, Guinea and South Africa. With their recent success and rising stature in the competition, Algeria heads into the tournament as a strong contender and a team to watch.
