In 2011, Uganda made its maiden CHAN appearance at the African Nations Championship in Khartoum, Sudan where the Uganda Cranes were placed in Group A alongside hosts Sudan, Algeria and Gabon. The Cranes lost all three group matches with 2‑0 to Algeria, 1‑0 to Sudan and 2‑1 to Gabon despite Ibrahim Sadam Juma scoring Uganda’s only goal in the tournament from the penalty spot against Gabon. The campaign was further marred by three red cards .
The squad featured Hamza Muwonge (Bunamwaya SC), Yasin Mugabi (Proline FC) and Godfrey Wakabu (KCCA FC) as goalkeepers. The Defenders included Jimmy Mukubya Simeon Masaba (URA FC) who was also ghe team captain, Habib Kavuma, Edward Ssali, Ayubu Kisaliita (all from Bunamwaya SC), Derrick Walulya (URA FC), Ivan Bukenya (Proline FC) and Denis Guma (SC Villa) . The midfield comprised Simon Sserunkuma (SC Villa), Mike Mutyaba (Bunamwaya SC), Noah Ssemakula (Express FC), Manco Kaweesa,
Stephen Bengo (URA FC), Owen Kasule (Bunamwaya SC), Ibrahim Sadam Juma (Bunamwaya SC) who notched the team’s lone goal . The forward line was made up of Tony Odur and Caesar Okhuti (Bunamwaya SC), Bruno Olobo (KCCA FC), Judah Mugalu (Victors FC) and Patrick Edema (Proline FC) .
