The Uganda Police Force has assured both Ugandan citizens and visiting delegations of maximum security throughout the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) tournament.
Speaking at a press conference held this morning at the Uganda Media Centre, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kituuma Rusoke, who is also the Uganda Police Spokesperson emphasized the country’s readiness to ensure law, order, and safety as Uganda prepares to host Group C matches at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Rusoke noted that while such high-profile events are moments of national pride and continental attention, they can also attract criminal elements. He warned that the Police are aware of possible risks, including petty theft, public disorder, and attempts to forge tickets to access the stadium without paying.
“As security, we are aware that some individuals take advantage of large crowds to commit crime or cause chaos,” he said. “Let it be clear: any such behavior will be met with the full force of the law.”
The Police have put in place tight security protocols around stadiums, hotels, training grounds, and key transit routes, working in collaboration with the military and intelligence agencies to ensure a safe tournament environment for all.
Rusoke issued a strong warning to potential offenders, especially those planning to engage in ticket fraud or impersonation, stating that surveillance systems and plainclothes officers will be in operation throughout the tournament.
“We are ready. Let no one think they can take advantage of this event. Criminals, be warned—security is fully alert and prepared,” Rusoke stressed.
The CHAN 2024 tournament kicks off on August 2, with Uganda’s first match scheduled for August 4. Thousands of fans and international guests are expected to attend.
