Uganda today marked a major milestone on the continental sports calendar with the official launch of the CHAN 2024 Tournament, reinforcing its readiness and commitment to host one of Africa’s most celebrated football competitions.
The launch, presided over by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, brought together top government officials, parliamentarians, and international dignitaries, underscoring the national pride and international support behind Uganda’s hosting of the tournament.
In attendance was the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Vice President, H.E Jessica Alupo Epel, Government Chief Whip, Hon. Hamson Obua, Minister for Presidency, Hon. Milly Babalanda and Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang.
Hon. Ogwang, emphasized the government’s strategic investments in sports infrastructure, particularly the renovation and expansion of key stadiums ahead of the tournament.
“Uganda’s preparations are in full gear — from stadium upgrades to logistics and security planning. We are more than ready to deliver a CHAN experience that reflects the heart and soul of Africa,” said Hon. Ogwang.
The event attracted a strong international diplomatic presence, further reflecting the regional significance of CHAN 2024. Ambassadors from the People’s Republic of Tanzania, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Federal Republic of Somalia, as well as Kenya’s Deputy High Commissioner and the Honorary Consulate of Lesotho, were all in attendance, offering messages of support and solidarity.
In his keynote address, President Museveni commended the spirit of sportsmanship and unity that CHAN represents. “Sports are a tool for peace, integration, and transformation. Uganda takes pride in hosting this event not only for competition, but for the strengthening of African brotherhood,” he stated.
As the host nation, Uganda will welcome teams composed of locally-based players from across the continent. The matches are expected to take place in modernized venues in Kampala, Namboole, and other selected cities, with thousands of fans anticipated to attend.
With today’s launch, Uganda has firmly positioned itself at the heart of African football, prepared to offer an unforgettable CHAN 2024 tournament that will spotlight local talent, national pride, and regional unity.
