Kampala, Uganda – July 2025 — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has described the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) as more than a sporting event, calling it a timely and symbolic reminder of the shared identity and unity among East African nations.
Speaking during the official launch of CHAN 2024, President Museveni praised the joint hosting arrangement between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania under the PAMOJA East Africa bid.
“When we bid together with Kenya and Tanzania as East Africa, we reminded ourselves that we are brothers,” the President said. “This tournament is about more than football—it is about our unity as a region.”
Highlighting the broad benefits of sports, President Museveni outlined four major advantages for individual athletes: stamina and determination, teamwork, speed, and good health.
“Sports builds your inner strength. You must have stamina and determination to succeed. It also teaches teamwork—those who coordinate well always outperform others,” he explained.
He went on to praise football for encouraging speed and sharp physical skills, and emphasized the health benefits of regular physical activity. “Sports burns fat, strengthens muscles, and keeps the body active. It is very good for your health,” he added.
Beyond the individual, President Museveni emphasized the national and societal advantages of sports. “Sportspeople are entertainers. They lift the mood of the public and build fame for their countries,” he said, recalling historic moments such as Kipchoge Keino’s 1968 Olympic victory and John Akii-Bua’s record-breaking win in 1972, which brought global attention to Kenya and Uganda respectively.
He also noted the growing role of athletes in business, especially in marketing and advertising, and stressed that sports serve as a positive outlet for youth. “It is a safe energy consumer,” he remarked. “A young person who trains hard will be too tired to engage in bad behavior. Sports keeps them focused.”
Returning to the regional significance of CHAN 2024, President Museveni underlined the deeper meaning of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania co-hosting the tournament. “We have teamed up not just for football, but to remind ourselves and the world that East Africa is united in purpose. CHAN is a symbol of that brotherhood.”
As Uganda prepares to welcome Africa to its stadiums alongside its partner nations, President Museveni’s message is clear: sports can strengthen unity, and CHAN 2024 offers East Africa a historic moment to celebrate both athletic talent and regional solidarity.
