In a momentous and historic occasion, the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has officially launched the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) tournament, marking Uganda’s role as the proud host of the continental football championship.
The launch event, held at Kololo Ceremonial grounds in Kampala has drawn a distinguished gathering of national leaders, government officials, and members of the international diplomatic corps, reflecting Uganda’s growing stature in African sports and regional diplomacy.
Among the key Ugandan dignitaries present are the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Vice President of Uganda, H.E Jessica Alupo Epel, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Uganda’s Minister Government Chief Whip, Hon. Hamson Obua (who is also the former Minister of State for Sports), Minister for Presidency, Hon. Milly Babalanda.
The event also witnessed the presence of international diplomats and regional representatives. Ambassadors from Tanzania, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Federal Republic of Somalia, along with Kenya’s Deputy High Commissioner, the Honorary Consulate of Lesotho, and the Secretary General of the East African Community are gracing the occasion, signaling strong regional collaboration and shared enthusiasm for African football.
Hon. Peter Ogwang, Minister of State for Sports, spoke passionately about the extensive preparations undertaken to ensure a successful hosting of the tournament.
“Uganda is ready to deliver a memorable CHAN 2024. Our stadiums, our people, and our spirit are prepared to welcome Africa,” he said.
President Museveni, in his keynote address, emphasized the unifying power of sports across borders and cultures. “Football transcends language, politics, and borders. As Uganda hosts CHAN 2024, we are not only promoting sport, but also strengthening the Pan-African bond,” he remarked.
As the host country, Uganda is set to welcome teams and fans from across the African continent, with matches scheduled in newly upgraded and iconic Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, and other key cities.
CHAN 2024 – the African Nations Championship – exclusively features players who compete in their domestic leagues, offering a unique platform for local talent to shine on a continental stage.
With the President’s symbolic kick-off, Uganda’s journey as host is officially underway, promising a celebration of talent, culture, and African unity through the beautiful game.
