In January 2023, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) invited bids to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Uganda (FUFA), Kenya (FKF) and Tanzania (TFF) came together under the “East Africa Pamoja” bid to express joint interest. After initial consultations, the three federations secured full support from their respective governments which signed the seven mandatory CAF hosting guarantees. FUFA President, Eng. Moses Magogo confirmed this while addressing the media stating that all requirements were met and submitted on time.
CAF evaluated all submissions and on 27 September 2023 awarded AFCON 2027 hosting rights to the East African trio. The announcement marked a historic first three nations jointly hosting the continent’s top football tournament. CAF officially confirmed the arrangement in December 2023 recognizing it as a symbol of regional unity and cooperation.
As a lead up to AFCON, CAF also awarded Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania the rights to co host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), officially selecting them on 17 December 2023. Later, the tournament was rescheduled to 2–30 August 2025.
Uganda will host all Group C fixtures at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. The group includes Uganda, Algeria, Niger, Guinea, and South Africa. Key games include Uganda vs. Algeria (August 4), Uganda vs. Guinea (August 8) and Uganda vs. Niger (August 11). Uganda will also host a quarterfinal on August 23, a semifinal on August 26 and the third place playoff on August 29. CAF confirmed Uganda’s hosting role on 19 June 2025.
CHAN 2025 will serve as a test run for AFCON 2027 helping the three countries prepare infrastructure, logistics and operations for the main event.
